Dandelions - nothing but weeds?

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

The beautiful yellow flower is hated by many - but maybe we should love it instead?

What are dandelions?

The dandelion belong to the Taraxacum family. It seems to be split opinions between botanists about the number of speices of dandelions inside the Taraxacum genus, but what we do know is that the flower has been along for a very long time. Humans have used it for food and medicine for most of our recorded history.

What's good about dandelions?

They are very easy to find and one single flower makes a whole lot of "babies" when it's time to let go of its seeds. Dandelions are also healthy, containing vitamins A, C, E & K and are high in calcium and manganese - just to mention a few!

What can you do with dandelions?

The whole plant is edible and actually one of the 14 most important wild plants to recognize in a survival situation (at least in Sweden, it may vary depending on what plants you have in your area!).

The flower petals can be used to make Vegan honey, tea or wine. The leaves can be eaten fresh. The roots can be used in the making of coffee (without caffeine) or to make tea.

Best of all - they're free and very easy to find (depending on where you live and which season you're in)!

Dandelion & Burdock is a traditional British drinks flavour and one of my favourites. You can get it in most supermarkets though whether the manufacturers actually but any dandilions or burdock in it any more I don't know, my expectation is that they would synthesis the flavour maybe adding token amounts to justify the labelling.

I always give the leaves to my rabbits to much on! It saves me lots of money on buying veggies at the supermarket also I only have to look outside my door rather than trek to the shop!

While some people find them ugly, I actually think they can be quite pretty! Especially when they are at this stage so you can get instagram goals pics like this haha:

All the best, Leia

What do dandelions taste like? I have never tried one but they look like they would taste bitter. 🙂

Best regards, Niklas 🎈
